As March heads towards April, tours and festivals abound, and the weather turns to snow it is time to perhaps reflect on the season and think of the Summer ahead. Training was well attended, with numbers forcing a rescheduling that was unfortunately halted as quickly as it began when someone decided they needed some new copper….nicking the electric cable at LP. But through training comes understanding and the development of core skills which can then be applied in matches. Attendance at training is important ….so reflect did you attend frequently enough? For me 2007/08 has been witness to a club that has realised that “win something” might actually have merit. The 1’s have a goal scoring average of more than 1 a game, in no small measure thanks to young Kevin !!!!! If you score more than the opposition, logic dictates that you will win………not attack, attack, attack in the Kevin Keegan style….perhaps a more considered approach. But the point of reflection is did we score enough? If not, then why not? What could we have done differently to ensure a better conversion rate? We all appreciate that playing hockey is great, for those who watch “live” then it can be equally enjoyable. Watching on TV is not the easiest, as the ball is propelled beyond the cameraman’s view at blistering pace. That said, during the Summer we have two major events – the conclusion of the Euro-team championships and also the Olympic games. Both will be available as highlights through youtube, EHL, FIH and England Hockey. But if you get the chance watch it live. Check out the length of pass and the techniques adopted, admire and try and understand how they throw such long aerial passes and look at the conversion rates for short corners (more importantly the height of the shot..low!!!).
